I’m not OK, you’re not OK
It is a lie from the pit of hell that says mankind is basically good, or that we are born as
blank sheets of paper and are corrupted by our society. The adage “I’m ok, you’re ok” is Satan’s way to keep men and women from realizing their need for God to cleanse them and make them new inside. Satan posing as an angel of light provides many artificial sources of light. Even some “Christian” religions add to this confusion by requiring you to act like you have light when only God can give you his light within you. Today’s passage shows us the difference between God’s Holiness (light) and the sinfulness (darkness) of mankind. But more importantly, it is about how God can make you light inside if you would let him. But the prerequisite is that you see through the lies of Satan regarding your current spiritual condition.
Walking in the Light
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
As we ponder God’s character from the above passage, I wonder if God would answer our trademark question below in the following way…
Who are you Lord?
I AM the Holy God who cannot allow sin in my presence as depicted by the illustration of light and darkness –holiness and sinfulness, being mutually exclusive. I AM the light of the world and you are in spiritual darkness. “The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.” (Isa 9:2NASB) I came to earth “to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, 78because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.” (Lk 1:77-79NIV)
Unless the Son of God shines in your heart, you have no place with me where I am. To illustrate this I created the universe to be dark to show you that without the physical sun, you would stumble around in pitch black darkness. There are many kinds of artificial light in the world today, neon, laser, spot, and flood lights all revealing your current narrow path but not showing you where it ultimately leads. Only the sun can give you enough light to see where that path ends up the final destination. Only the sun can show you what obstacles lie in your way, and keep you from being lost. So too, only the Son of God in his Word can give you true light to see the greater picture of your eternal destination. Without the Son of God, you are “groping” around in spiritual darkness (Acts 17: 27 NASB95).
Every one of you has inherited sin and selfishness from Adam and is without hope. But each of you has also personally broken my commandments at one time or another making you doubly lost. This is why I sent my Son Jesus to earth – to wash away your sinfulness, your lostness and your darkness. I AM the faithful God who has come to give you my salvation, forgiveness, love and to place my light in your hearts. If you would admit your sinfulness, need of me and lack of personal ability, you and I can be reconciled; if not, then you are basically calling me a liar and are further deceiving yourself and thus there can be no fellowship between us. For the limited time of this life, I AM your advocate, your defense lawyer (I know everything you have done and will do anyway), you can tell me anything because I have paid the price for your transgressions before the Father’s throne of justice. But one day when I come again, I will be your prosecutor and judge where you will have no one to speak up on your behalf if you do not accept my terms now in this life while you still have time.
First things first
Only when our sin is washed away by Christ’s blood do we have a basis for fellowship with God or with each of his children. No sense discussing things that only Christians can be empowered to do until we deal with the root problem. Jesus died for the sins of the whole world, your sin, not just those who are the elect. “Not only for ours” but the whole world –Everyone’s. However, not everyone will appropriate his work for them. (Many are called but few are chosen). Jesus is our advocate, not our judge, because he took our punishment on the cross already. He is the guarantor that our debt was paid for. As God, Jesus is the only one who had the right to set the price to satisfy his justice. And as God, he is the only one who has the ability to pay the price accordingly.
This is the process of receiving the light of life from God within us. When we allow the Holy, Righteous, Son of God – Jesus Christ die for us by admitting to him our sinfulness and our need, and then receive his gift of salvation; he puts his holiness or light inside us freely. Now we are light in the Lord. Now we can truly be received by and have fellowship with God who is pure light. Now we have a right standing with him and with other believers.
Religion preaches responsibility without giving you the resources
God is light. God created all physical forms of light on the first day of creation. Only once we have his light in us, now we can walk as children of light in this dark world. Now we are in a position to be used by God and have the wherewithal to live as light for others to see – a city set on a hill. Too many times “religion” pushes the responsibility without providing the power to do so. Christ first gives us the power, and the resources within us, before he gives any command. He gave us his divine nature and Holy Spirit upon salvation, thus he is the one who makes us walk in the light. We will see next week what that looks like. See also Eph 5 regarding walking in the light.
More to come,
