The Melchizedek Priesthood Part 1.
It is significant to note the between Biblical Christianity and human based versions of it
(along with many other religions) that only God can make us acceptable in his sight; not we ourselves through our many religious rituals, sacrificial systems and priesthoods. God is the author of salvation and only his perfect priesthood can make proper atonement for our sin condition with its many expressions breaking his Holy Law. As we will see in these next few sections of Hebrews, Christ alone is this eternal priest from heaven who can satisfy God’s righteous requirements on our behalf. In part one of the next three or so lessons we will deal with the type of Christ revealed to us originally in the character of Melchizedek.
In this age of relativism,
we see from this history lesson from the book of Genesis during an age of conscience when everyone did that which was right in his own eyes, and the worship of false gods was rampant across the known world. We see God reveal himself as the real source of righteousness and peace in the form of the Priest – Melchizedek. It is a short story found in Gen 14 starting at verse 18 but the writer here in Hebrews gives us more light on this mysterious priest.
Melchizedek the Priest
7 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, his name means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever. 4 Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5 Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, their brothers—even though their brothers are descended from Abraham. 6 This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 And without doubt the lesser person is blessed by the greater. 8 In the one case, the tenth is collected by men who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9 One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.
Who are you Lord?
I AM the pre incarnate Christ – Melchizedek. This is why I could tell the Jews that I
knew Abraham and I could say to them: “Before Abraham was born – I AM”. As much as people cling to Abraham as their father placing their hope in their ancestral connection to him, I scolded their Jewish leaders when I walked on this earth by saying, “I can raise up stones to be sons of Abraham.” I AM the eternal priest in the heavenly order of Melchizedek. I AM greater than and preceded Abraham as well as the earthly order of the Aaronic or Levitical Priesthood that would come from his body. Thus I have the right to receive the tithe from him and have the authority to bless him as well. I AM the king of righteousness and the king of peace and one day I will return to set up My literal, physical and truly righteous kingdom in Jerusalem where every knee will bow to me in worship. Abraham recognized me and “rejoiced to see my day”, how about you?
When reading an article trying to attribute mysticism, folklore, or pagan ritualism to Melchizedek; I found that Christ is the fulfillment of the eschatological Davidic prophecies in Psalms as the “Son of David”, and will be the future judge as referenced in the Dead sea writings as well as a “supernatural” priest as told within the Genesis narration and the Hebrew commentary which we are studying here.
If your hope is in any earthly priest today, then your hope is misled. If you are depending upon your own ideas of righteousness apart from what is revealed by God in the Bible, then you are not even in the right ball park. If you think that there are many gods from which to choose from and that all roads lead to heaven, then you will find yourself on the wrong side of the judicial balance. As we will see further in Pt 2; the great I AM is the only priest you need and his name is Jesus Christ in the better order of Melchizedek – Creator, Master, Savior, Lord, King, and the promised Judge of the living and the dead. “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” Jn 3:18 see also Jn 5:24; and 1 Jn 5:11-13.
