Sorry that this post is a bit long. It is hard to abbreviate all of what God wrote in the entire
Bible for us to understand in salvation. In many of our tribal locations where previous religions were in place, the complex methodology of human reasoning is now being replaced by the simplicity of salvation by faith as revealed by the Bible’s message. Jesus’ call to come unto me all you who are weary and heavily burdened to find rest for your souls is being responded to by countless people tired of religion and tradition.
Paul is warning Timothy that people tend to WANDER from the simplicity of the truth. We never intentionally leave it; we get side tracked by extemporaneous teaching and ideas. We get caught up by important things which fill our minds and time at the expense of really knowing God- who is our life. God says “you study the scriptures so that you may have life, but they are which testify of me (Jesus).” And “these things are written so that you may know that you have eternal life”. Thus Paul exhorts timothy to “study” (KJV) to be an approved workman in the word (knowledge for life’s sake, not knowledge’s sake). One who knows God and can lead others to him.
A Workman Approved by God
14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17 Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” 20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. 21 If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. 22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
Who are you Lord?
I AM the Word of truth, which the Word of God reveals. So when you misinterpret my word, then you can’t know me properly. Also you can mess up other people’s faith at the same time.
If my Word is who I AM, and knowing my word lets you know me, and as my word says in John 17:3 life eternal is knowing me. This then puts utmost importance on knowing my word properly. Because knowing my word is the key to life with me.
The desire to appear wiser than you are leads to the trap of head knowledge. The Pharisees thought that they knew my word, but they did not know me. There is a difference between knowledge of my word, and knowledge of me through my word; knowing me verses knowing about me which the wisdom of this age brings with it. Pursue a right handling of my word for the application of truth, that my life might be reflected in yours.
My Truth shall set you free indeed. Only the Word of God has the power to set captives free from the snares of rhetoric as used by the devil to trap people by trivial academia – knowledge for knowledge sake. Take me at my word. Don’t try to work your biases into it. Let the face value of my word, not the popular schools of thought, dictate what I mean. Even my prophets did not understand what they were writing about, but they wrote it anyway. Trust me. My Word will last eternally, but humanity’s wisdom will not. Then you will be articles of gold in my house used for noble purposes, that of leading others to me for salvation which is the most noble purpose of all.
Arguments, quarreling, disputes, and special interpretations of God’s Word side tract the Gospel. You need to spin a web of interpretation throughout the scriptures to support your views when you forsake taking God’s Word at face value. When you create a hierarchy of understanding which removes God’s word from the reach of the common man, you remove from them the ability to simply read and believe God’s Word without your particular shade of rose colored glasses. Then more time is required to explain your interpretations than the Word itself. Paul addresses this issue more to the errant Corinthian church by saying:
1 Cor 3:10-15 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
Contextually speaking this passage has to do with our “doctrines” of salvation. One commentary talks of this judgment as being of “doctrine on which we place our faith.” The “gold, silver, precious stones,” which all can withstand fire (Rev 21:18, 19), are teachings that will stand the fiery test of judgment; “wood, hay, stubble,” are those which cannot stand it; not outright heresy, for that would destroy the foundation, but teaching mixed up with human philosophy and Judaism, curious rather than useful…Where there is the least grain of real gold of faith, it shall never be lost (1Pe 1:7; compare 1Co 4:12). On the other hand, the lightest straw feeds the fire [Bengel] (Mt 5:19).
Often times people don’t even know if their theology is really spot on. All the junk that we cling to in our various theories regarding salvation clouds our understanding of the message of the Bible and the cross. That is why Paul says that he “doesn’t want to know anything except Christ and him crucified” 1 Cor 2:2. This is why he says that he is the master builder and we need to be careful what we build with on top of Paul’s Gospel. If that Gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, then what is all the other junk we add to it? Refuse- and it will burn. Liturgies, traditions, recited prayers, and anything else which you cling to as necessary for your salvation besides allowing Christ’s finished work on the cross be sufficient for you can be detrimental to your attaining salvation. “Church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to McDonald’s makes you a hamburger.”
More to come,
