Who are you Lord? I AM your life, do your thoughts reflect me? Col 3:1-17

Scripture says: “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”  I like to rephrase it as, “You are

Minds washed with the water of God's Word

what you think”.  Other verses say; “It is not what goes into a man what defiles him, but what comes out” and “God saw the thoughts and intents of man’s hearts were continually evil” prior to the flood.  “God sees our thoughts from afar.”  Jesus says that it is the same offense by our thinking evil thoughts as by actually doing them.   All this to ask the question; “what do you find yourself thinking about?”  Do you think, walk and live as mere mortals, or as children of the King of Kings?  Your mindset will be betrayed by your actions and words.  Let’s look at what God wants us to think about.

The God like life

3  Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, (thoughts and attitudes) which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, (thoughts and attitudes) slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive (thoughts and attitudes) whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Who are you Lord?

I AM your life and this is what it looks like in action.  It is only revealed in my Word, so know what I am like so that your new life in me will reflect me in this ungodly world.  I AM pure, righteous and holy so set your mind on pure, righteous and holy thoughts.  I AM Love, so fill your mind with my compassion for others.  I AM the merciful and forgiving God, so let my forgiveness wash away the bitterness of wrongs against you so you can be merciful too.  I AM the God of peace, which can calm your hearts and minds in these uncertain times.

You do not possess these attributes in you naturally, but when your mind dwells on me as revealed in the truth of my word, you will have the ability to help others who are distressed and in need.  In you they will see my glory.  Your mouth speaks and your hands work out what your mind focuses on, so focus on who I am and what I have done for you as revealed in My word with gratitude and encourage others with it.

Look up Psalms chapters 77:1-14 and 78:11-16 they are significant examples to us of what happens to people as they either remember or forget to focus on all that God had done for them during hard times.   Also I found it shocking to read in Judges 2:10 where it says that it took only one generation to pass after Joshua’s death where there was nobody “who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.”  Amazing!  Crossing the Jordan, the fall of Jericho, Fleeing Egypt, the Red Sea crossing?  Nobody told their kids????  Nobody encouraged each other to remember???  If you don’t know your God intimately, you will not have the wherewithal to be like him in the hardships that this world will throw at you.  It is difficult to live like God if you don’t know him.  “For where you treasure is, that is where your heart will be also.”  Let your treasure be the Lord.

More to come,

Steve
